I/III Bulería

Atelier piece

A long reversible piece,
born from a single painting.

Three garments came from the same painting. This is the first: a long gilet with the painting on velvet on one side and a contrast fabric on the other.

Bulería I/III worn, by an iron door: the bow at the front and the painting showing at the opening.

A painting does not repeat.
It is cut.

Bulería began as a painting. Then it moved onto velvet, printed from the original work. Three garments come from that fabric, each one cut on its own. When they are gone, the work is gone.

Close-up of the front, worn: the bow tied over the printed side, the collar lined in red.
The piece from behind, printed side: the painting covers the whole back.
The same back on the contrast side, with the centre pleat closed.

The painting

The painting came first, with no garment in mind: oil and pigment on stretched canvas, a single gesture carried from edge to edge. Later, Cristina Casadevall took that stroke onto velvet, and the question was no longer how to print it but where to cut it.

The cut

The drawing crosses the centre back seam and keeps going. Each garment is cut separately from the printed fabric, and the painting falls in a different place on each one. There are three. It will not be remade.

The piece

Two garments sewn back to back. On one side, the velvet printed with the painting; on the other, a contrast fabric chosen to accompany it. Because it is worn both ways, every seam has to hold from either side: there is no wrong side to hide anything.

The craft

Shirt collar, a bow at the front and a pleat at the back, set open and pressed in three stages. From the front nothing shows; as you walk it opens, and from behind the painting appears for a second. Pattern and making by hand, in an artisan workshop in Spain.

At the shop door, contrast side out, closed, with the bow at the front.
At the door, contrast side out, opening the front: the painting appears.
The front panel falls to one side and both sides show at once.
The piece closed, printed side out, with the bow at the front.
From behind at the same door: the painting fills the whole back.
The same door: the front opens and the printed painting appears inside.
